THREE ON SUNDAY

'Y'all,

The third Sunday of the month is this weekend, and I'll be showing some good stuff for y'all.

Starts at 10:30PM and is FREE.

Pre-conditioner hair + giant synthesizer, a carved canoe goes on buck-wild journey, and whiskey dancing in the streets of Northern Thailand.

Come out and say hello.

Martin'

IMPROVISATION ON A ‘CONCERTO GENERATOR'

Laurie Spiegel, 1977 (2 min., 40 sec.)

"Under a tight deadline, composer Laurie Spiegel slept in the labs of Bell Telephone while the final components for the Alles synthesizer were being completed. The final composition, commissioned by Bell and the Motion Picture Academy, is seen here in the only existing footage of the first real-time synthesizer being played."

Excerpted from OHM: The Early Gurus of Electronic Music.

PADDLE TO THE SEA

Bill Mason, 1966 (28 min.)

“Based on Holling C. Holling’s beloved Caldecott-awarded children’s book, William Mason’s stunning film follows the adventures of a tiny, wood-carved canoe as it forges its own path from Lake Superior through the Great Lakes and down to the Atlantic Ocean. Buoyed by beautiful photography and a sense of true wonder about the sun, Earth, and water, the Academy Award–nominated Paddle to the Sea is an unforgettable tribute to the forces of the natural world, as well as a thrilling journey across the waves and rapids of North America.”

PHI TA KHON: GHOSTS OF ISAN

Robert Millis and Richard Bishop, 2004 (78 min.)

"Masks and outfits made of coconut husks, rice steamers, shredded rags and clanging bells transform participants of Thailand’s PHI TA KHON festival into ghosts, devils, demons, and spirits unleashed for a bacchanal. Outrageous wooden phalluses and plenty of rice whiskey heighten licentious behavior as MO LAM--Thai country groove music--blasts from makeshift bands in the back of pickup trucks…
Described as ‘The Mardi Gras from Hell’ and ‘Thai Halloween" PHI TA KHON is a ghost festival that takes place every year in the Isan province of Northern Thailand."

Filmed on location by Robert Millis and Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls) in June 2004.

THREE ON SUNDAY

'Friends,

After a month pause, video screenings resume this Sunday, July 18th at Dan's in Denton.

Starts at 10:30PM and it is free.

We will be looking at a vintage tour of a UFO cult's California headquarters, a string quartet playing in four different airborne helicopters, and early video work by industrial/electronic music pioneers Cabaret Voltaire.

Come out and say hello.

Love,

Martin'

PICTORIAL TOUR OF UNARIUS
Unarius Academy of Science, 1987 (58 min.)

Founded in 1954 by Ernest and Ruth Norman, UNARIUS is one of the most colorful and long-lasting UFO spiritual groups in California. Known for the outrageous dress (and claims) of the organization’s late leader Archangel Uriel (Ruth Norman), students of UNARIUS continue to wait for the coming of the “space brothers” from their headquarters in El Cajon, California. The group produced this video tour in the mid 1980s as an attempt to recruit new members, explain their unusual philosophy, and give the curious a behind-the-scenes look at the organization.

KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN - HELICOPTER STRING QUARTET
Frank Scheffer, 1995 (77 min.)

“Karlheinz Stockhausen's Helikopter-Streichquartett is one of the most controversial and talked-about works of art in recent years. Premiering at the 1995 Holland Festival, it involved the members of a string quartet playing in four different helicopters flying through the air. The music the quartet plays is then sent to a central space and mixed at a soundboard. This film documents the complex preparations in the month leading up to the premiere of this work, as well as eliciting insights from the composer regarding how he conceived and executed it.”

DOUBLEVISION PRESENT: CABARET VOLTAIRE
Cabaret Voltaire & Paul Smith, 1982 (85 min.)

One of the first independent long form videos ever made, this compilation presents the electronic music pioneers early work “utilizing nascent video editing technology, splicing together television clips, performance videos and archival film footage with low-tech early video effects...”

Tracks: Diskono, Obsession, Trash (Part 1), Badge Of Evil, Nag,Nag,Nag, Eddie's Out, Landslide, Photophobia, Trash (Part 2), Seconds Too Late, Extract From JohnnyYesNo, Walls Of Jericho, This Is Entertainment, and Moscow.

THREE ON SUNDAY

'Friends,

After an early evening show at Dan's on Sunday, May 16th, I'll be showing some videos for y'all.

Nasty animation, depression-era music newsreels, and NYC No Wave.

Starts at 10:30PM, and is free.

Please spread the word if you think you know of anyone who may be interested.

Thanks,

Martin'

THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD (EPISODE 16)
Phil Mulloy, 1994 (3 min. 20 sec.)

“One of animation’s most prurient, dark and mischievous masters, multi-award-winning animator Phil Mulloy stands as an antidote to all that is kitsch and sentimental. Using simple brush pens and ink, Mulloy's works are witty and acerbic fables, loaded with graphic images of sex and violence that are both perceptive comments on human nature and challenges to contemporary values.”

TIMES AIN’T LIKE THEY USED TO BE (EARLY AMERICAN RURAL & POPULAR MUSIC)
Various sources, 1928 - 1935 (70 min.)

“In the early days of sound film, newsreel cameras captured the sights and sounds of everyday life in America, including its music. Musicians were filmed where they lived and played, captured by roving newsreel crews on street corners and front porches, at country dances and summer resorts in nightclubs, and broadcasting from churches and radio stations...” Fascinating rare footage of legendary figures in early American music: Jimmie Rodgers, Whistler's Jug Band, Bob Wills, Jack Johnson's Jazz Band, Bascom Lamar Lunceford and many more.

135 GRAND STREET NEW YORK 1979
Ericka Beckman, 1979 (60 min.)

“135 Grand Street, New York, 1979 is a unique film capturing both the aural and visual aesthetics of New York’s No Wave scene in its ascendant. Punk rock and non-musicianship fight it out with art world attitude. Garage band line-ups in varying degrees of musical destruction sit alongside post-everything poetry and experimental noise terrorists...” Featuring performances by Theoretical Girls, UT, A Band, Rhys Chatham, Chinese Puzzle, The Static, Morales, Youth in Asia, Steve Piccolo, Jill Kroesen, Glenn Branca, Evan Lurie, and Wharton Tiers.

THREE ON SUNDAY

'Hey,

Showing you some things for y'all this Sunday at Dan's in Denton, Texas.

Starts at 10:30PM, and it is free.

Martin'

JUMPING
Osamu Tezuka, 1984 (6 min.)

Anime pioneer Osamu Tezuka’s short film shows the world from the point of view of a bouncing ball (or jumping child). Each jump of the camera goes higher, each landing is a visual surprise (i.e, a city setting, a jungle, the ocean floor, a battle field in wartime, the depths of Hell, etc.). Jumping won the Grand Prize at the 1984 Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films.

GOD DAMN RELIGION
Richard Bishop, 2008 (30 min.)

“This film is a diabolical experiment in hypnotic mind control—a phantasmagoric presentation of demonic and divine imagery, meticulously assembled and designed to put the viewer into an altered state of darkened awareness. Includes original music from ‘Elektronika Demonika’, as well as unreleased material... Contains some strong sexual content. Not for the weak-minded, faint of heart, or those suffering from occasional seizures.”

IGGY POP LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO
TARGET VIDEO
, 1981 (60 min.)

“This concert film captures the former Stooges front man performing in San Francisco during a 1981 tour. Although the tour was in support of the album Party, Pop serves up songs a dozen songs that draw from every era of his career. The set list includes "T.V. Eye," "Lust for Life," "Some Weird Sin," and "Bang Bang." His backing band includes such famous faces as Clem Burke and Carlos Alomar.” - Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

SANTA CLAUS STORY
Castle Films, 1940? (9 min.)

Cameraman Eugene W. Castle created Castle Films in 1924 and in its 40-year history created over 1,000 short films ranging in all ranges of subjects. Castle’s films were sold through mail order to institutions and home projectionists. “Santa Claus Story” is just one of many holiday-themed shorts, but few are as strange. This “story” consists of a children’s lecture using stock footage of monkeys fighting over food, wearing Santa outfits, and ripping open gifts.

WINTER CAROUSEL (CARROUSEL BORÉAL)
Ladislaw Starewicz, 1958 (12 min.)

Polish stop-motion animator and entomologist began his career in 1910 attempting to film the battle of two live stag beetles. Unsuccessful, Starewicz later used dead insects with articulated joints, creating puppets of the subjects he studied. As his technique improved, Starewicz began using elaborate (and often disturbing) puppets to create his fantastic and strange narrative films. Created late in the animator’s life, “Winter Carousel” is a quiet, delicate children’s film beautifully celebrating the passing of the seasons.

YOU BETTER WATCH OUT! (CHRISTMAS EVIL)
Lewis Jackson, 1980 (95 min.)

Harry Stadling (Brandon Maggert) is obsessed with Christmas! In fact he wants to "be" the authentic Santa Claus, with a real suit, sleigh and reindeer. Ever since he learned the "truth" about Santa, he's tried to make Christmas a reality. Growing up a toy maker, Harry is met with naysayers and critics who mock him for his yuletide beliefs, but
he wants people to get the presents they deserve, even if that means giving the gift of murder! Director Lewis Jackson’s dark comedy is, according to cult film director/auteur John Waters, "the best seasonal film of all time”.

THREE ON SUNDAY

'Hello.

Just wanted to let y'all know I'll be doing the video thing at Dan's Silver Leaf this Sunday. 10:30PM. FREE.

Showing three Texas-based videos: a JFK assassination recreation, a great black variety program filmed in Dallas in the mid-1960s, and the Butthole Surfers live in 1985.

Next screenings will be on the third Sunday of December (the 20th) with a Xmas theme.

Martin'

THE ETERNAL FRAME

Ant Farm and T.R. Uthco, 1975 (24 min.)

Using Abraham Zapruder’s famous film of the Kennedy assassination as their starting point, T.R. Uthco and Ant Farm construct a multi-leveled event that is simultaneously a live performance spectacle, a taped re-enactment of the assassination, a mock documentary, and, perhaps most insidiously, a simulation of the Zapruder film itself. Performed in Dealey Plaza in Dallas — the actual site of the assassination — the re-enactment elicits bizarre responses from the spectators, who react to the simulation as though it were the original event.

THE!!!! BEAT

WFAA Television, 1966 (30min.)

Legendary Nashville deejay Hoss Allen’s short-lived variety program “The!!!! Beat” featuring an influential line-up of some of the best black performers of the 1960s. As the only independent color television station in the south, the WFAA studio in Dallas hosted the recording of the program. This episode features host Hoss Allen, The Mighty Hannibal, Little Gary Ferguson, Gatemouth Brown. Johnny Taylor, Wanda Rouzan, and The Beat Boys.

BLIND EYE SEES ALL

Butthole Surfers, 1985 (80 min.)

This mid-80s VHS release documents the Butthole Surfers performing live at the club Traxx in Detroit, Michigan in 1985. Includes Trevor Malcolm on sousaphone and bedroom interviews.

Songs: The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave, One Hundred Million People Dead, Bar-be-que Pope, Cowboy Bob, Hey, Tornados, Dum Dum, Mexican Caravan, Cherub, Lady Sniff, Something, Mark Says Alright, and PSY.

'Hello Y'all.

I will be showing some videos at Dan's Silver Leaf this Sunday.

Starts at 10:30PM, and it is free.

Below you will find descriptions of the videos, as well as a few Youtube links.

Come out and punch me in the face!

WHO I AM AND WHAT I WANT

Chris Shepherd and David Shrigley, 2005 (7 min. 20 sec.)

'This is about who I am and what I want. It’s not about who you are and what you want. You always think everything I write is about you but it’s not. It’s all about me. So don’t get upset and say that I misunderstand you because it’s not your words I’m writing it’s mine. I don’t care about you and I don’t care about what you want just shut up and
listen...' – David Shrigley

'Who I am…' (Excerpt)

EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE! THE MOVIE

Ghoul Skool, Commodore Gilgamesh, and Future Schlock, 2009 (51 min.)

If you find amusement acknowledging tracking problems on a video uploaded to Youtube, this is an hour for you.

Continuing in the visual tradition of Doug Smith’s SubGenius Barrage tape, the work of Craig Baldwin, and more recently the methods of TV Carnage and Animal Charm, EIT takes discarded VHS instructional tapes, vanity projects of deluded 'experts', and some of the stupidest films ever made, to present an hour perfectly honed for another generation laughing at the latest dead media.

'SINGING BABIES!'

'The Ballad of Vincent'

ROCK & ROLL SCOPITONES

Compiled by Spike Priggen, 2009 (90 min.)

Forerunner of the music video, Scopitones were a type of jukebox with a 16mm film component. Having gained popularity in Europe in the 1950s, eventually the machines could be found in the United States by the mid -1960s.

Musician Spike Priggen (author of the Bedazzled blog) has compiled 39 of his favorite Scopitone films for this unusual collection. Featuring Rockabilly, Garage, Yé-Yé, Pop-Psych, Surf, Instrumental, R&B, and Folk-Rock acts.

PIZZA PIZZA DADDY-O
Bess Lomax Howes, 1967 (18 min.)

Filmed by anthropologist Bess Lomax Howes (daughter of musicologist John Lomax, and sister of Alan), PIZZA PIZZA DADDY-O looks at continuity and change in girls' playground games at a Los Angeles school in 1967. The players are a dozen African American fourth-grade girls (9 - 10 years old).

Songs and games performed include: My Boyfriend Gave Me a Box, Mighty, Mighty Devil, My Mother Died, This-A-Way Batman, and Pizza Pizza Daddy-O.

The Monument of Chief Rolling Mountain Thunder
Allie Light and Irving Saraf, 1983 (29 min.)

At age 71, Chief Thunder lives in the Nevada desert with his young wife and small children in The Monument, a concrete and stone house he built and decorated with powerful forms and arches. His sculptures, "spirits of the living," portray Indian heroes, family, and friends. He created the monument when a voice spoke in a dream. The film captures the tragedy of his life, his painful isolation, the beauty of his work, and his creative process.
