PICTORIAL TOUR OF UNARIUS
Unarius Academy of Science, 1987 (58 min.)

Founded in 1954 by Ernest and Ruth Norman, UNARIUS is one of the most colorful and long-lasting UFO spiritual groups in California. Known for the outrageous dress (and claims) of the organization’s late leader Archangel Uriel (Ruth Norman), students of UNARIUS continue to wait for the coming of the “space brothers” from their headquarters in El Cajon, California. The group produced this video tour in the mid 1980s as an attempt to recruit new members, explain their unusual philosophy, and give the curious a behind-the-scenes look at the organization.


KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN - HELICOPTER STRING QUARTET

“Karlheinz Stockhausen's Helikopter-Streichquartett is one of the most controversial and talked-about works of art in recent years. Premiering at the 1995 Holland Festival, it involved the members of a string quartet playing in four different helicopters flying through the air. The music the quartet plays is then sent to a central space and mixed at a soundboard. This film documents the complex preparations in the month leading up to the premiere of this work, as well as eliciting insights from the composer regarding how he conceived and executed it.”

JUMPING
Osamu Tezuka, 1984 (6 min.)



Anime pioneer Osamu Tezuka’s short film shows the world from the point of view of a bouncing ball (or jumping child). Each jump of the camera goes higher, each landing is a visual surprise (i.e, a city setting, a jungle, the ocean floor, a battle field in wartime, the depths of Hell, etc.). Jumping won the Grand Prize at the 1984 Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films.

SANTA CLAUS STORY
Castle Films, 1940? (9 min.)



Cameraman Eugene W. Castle created Castle Films in 1924 and in its 40-year history created over 1,000 short films ranging in all ranges of subjects. Castle’s films were sold through mail order to institutions and home projectionists. “Santa Claus Story” is just one of many holiday-themed shorts, but few are as strange. This “story” consists of a children’s lecture using stock footage of monkeys fighting over food, wearing Santa outfits, and ripping open gifts.

WINTER CAROUSEL (CARROUSEL BORÉAL)
Ladislaw Starewicz, 1958 (12 min.)



Polish stop-motion animator and entomologist began his career in 1910 attempting to film the battle of two live stag beetles. Unsuccessful, Starewicz later used dead insects with articulated joints, creating puppets of the subjects he studied. As his technique improved, Starewicz began using elaborate (and often disturbing) puppets to create his fantastic and strange narrative films. Created late in the animator’s life, “Winter Carousel” is a quiet, delicate children’s film beautifully celebrating the passing of the seasons.

Harry Stadling (Brandon Maggert) is obsessed with Christmas! In fact he wants to "be" the authentic Santa Claus, with a real suit, sleigh and reindeer. Ever since he learned the "truth" about Santa, he's tried to make Christmas a reality. Growing up a toy maker, Harry is met with naysayers and critics who mock him for his yuletide beliefs, but
he wants people to get the presents they deserve, even if that means giving the gift of murder! Director Lewis Jackson’s dark comedy is, according to cult film director/auteur John Waters, "the best seasonal film of all time”.

THE ETERNAL FRAME

Ant Farm and T.R. Uthco, 1975 (24 min.)

Using Abraham Zapruder’s famous film of the Kennedy assassination as their starting point, T.R. Uthco and Ant Farm construct a multi-leveled event that is simultaneously a live performance spectacle, a taped re-enactment of the assassination, a mock documentary, and, perhaps most insidiously, a simulation of the Zapruder film itself. Performed in Dealey Plaza in Dallas — the actual site of the assassination — the re-enactment elicits bizarre responses from the spectators, who react to the simulation as though it were the original event.

WFAA Television, 1966 (30min.)

Legendary Nashville deejay Hoss Allen’s short-lived variety program “The!!!! Beat” featuring an influential line-up of some of the best black performers of the 1960s. As the only independent color television station in the south, the WFAA studio in Dallas hosted the recording of the program. This episode features host Hoss Allen, The Mighty Hannibal, Little Gary Ferguson, Gatemouth Brown. Johnny Taylor, Wanda Rouzan, and The Beat Boys.


BLIND EYE SEES ALL

Butthole Surfers, 1985 (80 min.)

This mid-80s VHS release documents the Butthole Surfers performing live at the club Traxx in Detroit, Michigan in 1985. Includes Trevor Malcolm on sousaphone and bedroom interviews.

A much-desired video curiosity since musician Russell Simins brief description in the influential Grand Royal magazine, Future Shock was James Brown’s all too brief attempt at creating a Soul Train-style dance show. Recorded at the studios of what now is WTBS in Atlanta, Brown’s program can arguably be regarded as just an exercise in vanity that happens to feature some of the most insane, stupid, and amazing 70s era dancing you’ll ever see.'

Live television footage of master pickpocket Henri Kassagi entertaining (and playfully stealing) from an audience in the round from the French circus television program “Star Spangled Track” in 1962. Kassagi was a professional thief who later used the skills he developed in the underworld of Tunisia to become a magician. Kassagi was also a crime consultant for films (including Robert Bresson’s 1959 film Pickpocket).

German experimental filmmaker Timo Katz uses still photos of the facades of a row house community to illustrate how the inhabitants of these homes create variation and difference through exterior décor, while the architecture of the structures are an endless disturbing repetition of the same basic design. Using scanned 1950s educational stickers and drawings by illustrator Geoffrey Higham (whose work is often associated with British author Enid Blyton), Wrake creates a beautiful and disturbing short animated film.

In 1976, scientists predicted a volcano eruption that would destroy Guadeloupe. The island was evacuated; the newspapers reported that one man refused to leave. Herzog immediately arrived with a small crew in order to be on hand for the end. This fascinating study of imminent disaster and the man “who stays” is one of Herzog’s major works.

A compilation featuring some of Leonard Cohen's earliest interviews on the Canadian television show "This Hour Has Seven Days", live performances from the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, an excerpt from the film "Dynamite Chicken", duets with Judy Collins, and his 1985 appearance on Miami Vice.

In this animated short, band practice is interrupted by "Donald
Trumpet", who tells the musicians about some of his problems. These
problems include pizza, hot dogs, soft serve ice cream, and more.

Hooliganship is the Northwest's answer to the visual culture of Fort
Thunder, Forcefield, Paper Rad, and Dear Raindrop. Using music,
animation, installation, and performance, the duo "revel in a hypnotic
abundance of digital information".

He was the 16-year-old Guru Maharaj Ji and, as the Millennium
approached, he promised to levitate the Houston Astrodome. It was the
early Seventies and anything was possible so thousands flocked to his
gathering. Follow him from his mansion in New York to the limousines
in Houston, listen to his followers and watch the spectacle unfold
just as the guerilla documentary collective TVTV did in this long out
of print Alfred I. DuPont award winning documentary.

Filmed by anthropologist Bess Lomax Howes (daughter of musicologist John Lomax, and sister of Alan), PIZZA PIZZA DADDY-O looks at continuity and change in girls' playground games at a Los Angeles school in 1967. The players are a dozen African American fourth-grade girls (9 - 10 years old).

Songs and games performed include: My Boyfriend Gave Me a Box, Mighty, Mighty Devil, My Mother Died, This-A-Way Batman, and Pizza Pizza Daddy-O.



The Monument of Chief Rolling Mountain Thunder
Allie Light and Irving Saraf, 1983 (29 min.)

At age 71, Chief Thunder lives in the Nevada desert with his young wife and small children in The Monument, a concrete and stone house he built and decorated with powerful forms and arches. His sculptures, "spirits of the living," portray Indian heroes, family, and friends. He created the monument when a voice spoke in a dream. The film captures the tragedy of his life, his painful isolation, the beauty of his work, and his creative process.

Transferred from 8mm film, this film footage features WWIl-era parades and public events surrounding the downtown square in Denton, Texas. Includes a parade of white clad physicians, a monkey riding a horse, a dancing donkey, and appearances by Roy Rogers and Gabby Hayes.

"Doin' Time in Times Square documents the view and action outside Charlie Ahearn's 43rd Street apartment window from 1981 to 1983. Ahearn, whose 1983 film Wild Style was a cult hip hop hit, was 'blessed' with a generous view of the sleaze emporiums up Eighth Avenue and down 43rd. His window provides a view into midtown New York's street brutality in the dark years before it was 'cleaned up'... capturing rip-offs, drug sales, police stake-outs and fist fights."

"During its heyday in the early to mid-1900s, the Maxwell Street Market area represented one of the most fascinating chapters in American urban history. People congregated there by the thousands to shop for bargains in junk stores and on pushcarts... They went, too, for the street musicians, hucksters, rousing preachers, and street entertainers."



Mike Shea's only film, "And This Is Free" was recorded over sixteen Sundays on Chicago's Maxwell Street in 1964.'

FRIENDS ARE MAGIC PART III: TWIRLING DRIFTER

Whirl the Fisherman is a strange and enigmatic figure of which bottom and the place of mainly unknown stay running. Which little is known suggests an illusory and defamed creature born most admirably of the low belly in difficulty of the conventional polished company.

It is believed, that, like Athéna, Whirl burst entirely formed of the head of his father, whose intention was to devour him in fear of his unimaginable powers. However, two additional fathers would materialize, to only devour and then to release the young Whirl by the frontal lobe. It is largely speculated that the Fisherman was never a baby and dreamed for a childhood by the broken and shaded whispers of the radio frequencies which can only be heard in the swamplands which frame the third and the fourth dimension.

There are odd memories of the anonymous citizens who mask themselves behind the curtains of time. Some recall a young person of a hair buckled entirely, occupied in the act of the sexual relations with their winter coat to the conclusion of a festival of Christmas. The supposed friends of Whirl the Fisherman remember an elegant plate malfaisant in a white costume of fabric, Samuel Langhorne Clemens, or of the chicken fried by Kentucky Colonel. He would pack around the room, jumped to bell-foot upwards on the amphetamine, and then howl 'small Giacometti!' with each one he saw. Then, he would tickle them with a brilliant feather and fellate them until the morning.That which the case, he is not a heart to be taken slightly. His eyes are cameras nitrogenize-filled of fuel which see the world in a way in which is completely terrifying and completely truth. He sees models in unknown models and angles with the remainder of humanity. You cannot like what you see, but you are better to have seen it. To sweep far the familiar one and to allow you the exposure whirling of Fisherman manner, children.
