ASPARAGUS
Suzan Pitt, 1979 (20 min.)
"This candy colored nightmare shocked audiences upon its release and moved filmmaker Pitt to the front ranks of independent animation. Stunning cel animation propels its blank-faced protagonist into the world of the phallus, rendered here as a field of asparagus, which she deep throats, excretes and flushes away...The film's set piece occurs before a claymation audience who gape as the artist opens her Medusa's box to release rare wonders. Asparagus remains, thirty years after its release, a benchmark of single frame intensity."
SIGNER’S SUITCASE (ON THE ROAD WITH ROMAN SIGNER)
Peter Liechti, 1996 (85 min.)
"Though little known in the U.S., Swiss artist Roman Signer has been making his ‘temporary sculptures’--actions that he documents with film and video since the 1970s. These events, which can involve anything from amplified snoring to small rockets, are usually short-lived, often funny and always cathartic." - Gregory Volk, Art in America
Signer’s Suitcase follows the artist across Europe as he creates art from gunpowder and fuse, rubber boots, balloons, stool, small table, a three-wheeled Piaggio, and more.
FUTURE SHOCK
WTCG - Atlanta, 1975 (29 min.)
A much-desired video curiosity since musician Russell Simins brief description in the influential Grand Royal magazine, Future Shock was James Brown’s all too brief attempt at creating a Soul Train-style dance show. Recorded at the studios of what now is WTBS in Atlanta, Brown’s program can arguably be regarded as just an exercise in vanity that happens to feature some of the most insane, stupid, and amazing 70s era dancing you’ll ever see.'
