DUSK RIDER: MORE THAN THIS

At CADD Art Lab:

'MORE THAN THIS: Opening Reception
Thursday, November 13, 2008, 5-8 p.m.

Join us for the opening reception of our second exhibition, which includes our new member galleries Dunn and Brown Contemporary, Light & Sie, and Mighty Fine Arts.

The exhibition will feature paintings, sculpture, drawings, and installations by artists including Anderson and Low, Scott Anderson, Frances Bagley, Scott Barber, Kevin Bewersdorf, Paul Booker, Candace Briceno, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Tracy Hicks, Terrell James, Tom Orr, Jennifer Rose, Carl Suddath, Takako Tanabe, Jackie Tileston, Erik Tosten, and Lizzy Wetzel.

The title "More Than This" refers both to the potential of objects to create meaning--whether calling into question the world around you or divulging an internal fantasy--and to the futility of it, as the Roxy Music song claims, "more than this/there is nothing."

The exhibition runs November 13, 2008 through January 8, 2009.'

TEOREMA

He is a mysterious figure which appears in the lives of a family Italian typical middle-class man. He engages in sexual businesses with all the members of the household: the good one with religious enthusiasm, the sensitive son, the sexually repressed mother, the timid girl and, in conclusion, the father tormented. The foreigner gives unstintingly, not asking anything in exchange.

Then a day he leaves, as suddenly and mysteriously as he came. Incompetent to support the vacuum in their lives, the mother becomes a nymphomaniac, the son an artist, the girl catatonique and the father a sexual prowler. The servant, on the one hand, appears in the last scene carrying out while passing a miracle.

NITE PATROL: THREE ON SUNDAY

(via carrioncart, known also Twirl the Fisherman, known also Martin Iles):

'Unknown Denton Parades
Courtesy of the Denton Public Library, 1940s (11 min.)

Transferred from 8mm film, this film footage features WWIl-era parades and public events surrounding the downtown square in Denton, Texas. Includes a parade of white clad physicians, a monkey riding a horse, a dancing donkey, and appearances by Roy Rogers and Gabby Hayes.

With music selections from "I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore" (Mississippi Records).

Doin' Time in Times Square
Charlie Ahearn, 1992 (39 min.)

"Doin' Time in Times Square documents the view and action outside Charlie Ahearn's 43rd Street apartment window from 1981 to 1983. Ahearn, whose 1983 film Wild Style was a cult hip hop hit, was 'blessed' with a generous view of the sleaze emporiums up Eighth Avenue and down 43rd. His window provides a view into midtown New York's street brutality in the dark years before it was 'cleaned up'... capturing rip-offs, drug sales, police stake-outs and fist fights."

And This Is Free
Mike Shea, 1964 (50 min.)

"During its heyday in the early to mid-1900s, the Maxwell Street Market area represented one of the most fascinating chapters in American urban history. People congregated there by the thousands to shop for bargains in junk stores and on pushcarts... They went, too, for the street musicians, hucksters, rousing preachers, and street entertainers."

Mike Shea's only film, "And This Is Free" was recorded over sixteen Sundays on Chicago's Maxwell Street in 1964.'

More of the Iles of Martin soon.

LET'S DO THIS

There is a turning in the life, where one must go down from the barrier and
take a stand for the conservation of the future. Your moment is here, children. Know you now what to do.

LOOKING GLASS SHATTERED: BLACK MOON

Out of the apocalyptic Moon of Black of the imagination of Louis Malle, the Lily (Cathryn Harrison, the grand-daughter of Rex) involves a reduction road alone, and is soon in an alternate world full with the sequiturs and odd characters. Sometimes, this resembles a film of David Lynch, which with old lady conversing with a rat, a package of naked children driving out a pig, a speaking unicorn, a strange twin unit incestuous of same probably parents(one of which is 'underground' high-speed motorboat of film, Joe Dallesandro), and several other deformed prepared blows. Malle supposedly gathered the inspiration for the account of this film of his own dreams.
